Zion leading the contest 1-0, a Penalty Shot was awarded 5 minutes into the 2nd half for U-High. Zain Becerra capitalized on the chance and knotted the game at 1-1. With 18 minutes left, Mt. Zion scored their second goal, taking the lead. U-High had several late chances but could not put one home. The team ended their season with 13 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie. Zain Becerra was the leading scorer on the team with 14 goals, and Brock Jones came in second with 8 goals and 5 assists. Goalie Jimmy Munson recorded 9 shutouts with a 1.17 goals against average.

The winner will meet the winner of Champaign Centennial vs. Springfield High School.

U-High Wins Regional Title

October 22nd, 2011 (6:00 pm)

Connor Brooks and Jimmy Munson had monster games on both ends of the field as U-High moved past Normal West High School 1-0. With 20 minutes to go in the first half, Hunter Somers crossed a ball into the box. The ball ricocheted off of several players before finding Connor Brooks. Brooks touched it once to his right and slotted it into the bottom right hand corner.

In the second half, U-High and West both had chances, but neither team could score. Jimmy Munson was already having a huge game in net when he stopped a Normal West breakaway with 7 minutes left in the game. Munson recorded his 9th shutout of the season with the clutch save (video below). The Pioneer defense held strong and continued to clear everything out as they held on for the win. Thank you goes to Bodo Fritzen for allowing us to use the Corn Crib soccer field. CONGRATULATIONS PIONEERS!

U-High Blanks Mahomet 4-0, Moves On

October 18, 2011 (9:00 pm)

Feras Becerra netted two goals as U-High got on the board 4 times against Mahomet Seymour High School in Mahomet. Feras opened up his scoring 20 minutes into the first half with a well placed shot into the lower left hand corner. Will Provosty added another with an exceptional shot that hooked over the goalie and into the upper 90 (video below). In the second half, U-High kept rolling. Connor Brooks got in on the action after slotting a breakaway into the right hand corner, assisted by Brock Jones. Finally, Feras finished the scoring by tapping in a Josh Ashley pass. Jimmy Munson recorded his 8th shutout of the season. U-High now plays the winner of Bloomington vs Normal West that is being played tomorrow night.

Round 1 of the IHSA playoffs is about to begin and U-High will start out with Mahomet-Seymour High School as a regional opponent. The last time the two teams met up, U-High won 3-0. The match will be at 5pm at Mahomet. Click Here for the IHSA 2A Bracket

The Pioneer Junior Varsity team had an excellent showing in the Peoria Notre Dame JV Tournament in Morton. The team made it to the finals and placed 2nd in the tournament out of 16 teams.

Game by Game:

U-High vs Champaign Central, Pool Play 1-1 Tie (4-5 PK loss)
The wind played a major factor but U-High held on in the first half as Andrew Kamischke made several awesome saves. In the second half, Central got a lucky bounce when their striker found the ball and slotted it into the corner of the net making it 1-0 with 10 minutes left. 30 seconds later, the Pioneers answered. Basheer Becerra found the ball and buried it into the top netting on a pass from Jaik Hunt, tieing the game at 1-1. The final 9 minutes was a battle, but it ended in a tie and went into a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, U-High lost 4-5.

U-High vs Sacred Heart Griffin, Quarterfinal 1-0 Win
Once again, U-High played against the wind in the first half, and held off SHG. In the second half, the Pioneers went on the attack. Alexander Bruno found an opening on the left wing, and crossed the ball to Riley Hamilton, who headed it home. The goal held up, and U-High advanced to the Semifinals. Andrew Kamischke recorded the shutout.

U-High vs Quincy Notre Dame, Semifinal 2-1 Win
Going against the wind in the first half seemed to be working for U-High, as they started against it again. This time, U-High struck first with a Riley Hamilton goal off a rebound. Quincy scored almost immediately afterwards on a cross that could not get cleared. In the 2nd half, with time winding down, Alexander Bruno had 3 freekicks. He forced a good save from the goalkeeper on his first shot from 25 yards. His second freekick hit the crossbar from 27 yards out. Finally, on his third freekick from 30 yards out, Bruno swerved it over the wall and into the top left corner, making it 2-1 with 6 minutes left. U-High held on for the win.

U-High vs Peoria Notre Dame, Final 0-3 Loss
For 50 of the 60 minutes of the match, it was 0-1 in favor of PND. U-High fought hard to get back into the game but could not find the goal that would knot the contest. After a good chance by Riley Potter, and a scramble in front of the goal U-High came up empty handed. PND scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes to end the game and seal U-High's 2nd place finish.

October 13, 2011 (9:00 am)

Trying to build some momentum before the IHSA playoffs, the Pioneers looked for a crucial road win against Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin. The match was a continual battle the entire time, producing several very hard tackles and late challenges. At the 20 minute mark of the first half, Feras Becerra controlled a lose ball 25 yards out, skipped it around an SHG defender, and hit a volley past the Cyclone's goaltender. With a 1-0 lead, U-High got several other chances, but could not pull away from their opponent. In the second half, U-High's defense proved their worth and Jimmy Munson made several sure-handed saves to preserve the win.

U-High Goes 2-1 in Jacksonville

October 8th, 2011 (9:00 pm)

The U-High soccer team went to Jacksonville and obtained 3rd place over the weekend. The 2-1 record started with a revenge win against Galesburg High School. In their first meeting, U-High tied the Streaks 2-2, but this time, U-High piled on the goals in a lopsided 4-0 victory. The goals were scored by Zain Becerra, Brock Jones, Hunter Somers, and Myles Shane (his first of the season). Assists were recorded by Brock Jones and Hunter Somers. In the second game, the Pioneers struggled finding the net, losing to Bloomington in a 2-1 battle. The lone U-High goal was scored late in the contest by Feras Becerra, assisted by Brent Emmerson. In the 3rd place game, the Pioneers showed life again, beating Warrensburg High School by a score of 4-1. Goals were scored by Mark Nalefski and Zain Becerra (three). This was Zain's first hat trick of the season. Luke Otto, Feras Becerra, and Dan Phipps assisted in 3 of the goals. The goal of the tournament for the Pioneers was Mark Nalefski's first half strike against Warrensburg. The ball was bouncing to Nalefski's right when he struck a volley into the upper-90 to beat the Warrensburg goaltender from about 20 yards out. U-High's final regular season game will be against Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin at their place on Wednesday Night (6:30pm).

Pioneers & Becerra, Too Much for Central

September 26, 2011 (9:00 pm)

The wind, rain, and Champaign Central, could not stop the Pioneer offense. The offensive firepower continued to burn as U-High beat the visitors 2-1 on Senior Night. After Champaign scored an improbable 35 yard goal on the 10 minute mark, U-High seemed to wake up. At the 20 minute mark, Feras Becerra received the ball on the right wing and got around his defender. Feras then played a perfect pass to his older brother, Zain Becerra, who finished the ball easily. Within 7 minutes of the first goal, Zain struck again. This time it was a similar play, with Feras beating his defender, playing a quick ball into the box to Brock Jones, and Jones finding Zain to finish the ball. U-High is on a 3-game winning streak and visiting Springfield High School on Wednesday at 4:30pm. Thank you to all the parents who made Senior Night a special night for the graduating Pioneers!

The Pioneers jumped all over United Township High School on Saturday, winning 5-1. Brock Jones opened the scoring when he touched the ball around the UTHS goaltender with an unassisted breakaway at the 9 minute mark. With 16 minutes left in the first half, Zain Becerra nodded in a corner kick from Brad Dulee. The goal was Zain's 7th of the year. Will Provosty entered the scoring sheet when he finished a pass from Feras Becerra with 3 minutes left in the first half. In the second half, The Pioneers added two more. Connor Brooks tallied his 2nd goal of the season when he finished a headed flick by Feras Becerra at the far post. Josh "Shoes" Ashley ended the scoring when he headed in a sublime cross from Mark Nalefski with 10 seconds left in the contest. U-High moves its record to 7-5-1 and are in action again on Monday for Senior Night against Champaign Central High School.

U-High Offense Awakens

September 22, 2011 (9:00 pm)

The Pioneer soccer team struggled finding goals until their luck changed in the 2nd half of tonight's match against Dunlap High School. Brock Jones opened the scoring early (assisted by Hunter Somers) in the 2nd half by smoothly touching the ball around the Dunlap goaltender. This was Brock's 5th goal of the season. Six minutes later, Connor Brooks netted his first goal of the season after he broke in on the left wing assisted by a chipped through ball by Brad Dulee. With 5 minutes left in the contest, U-High was still pushing the tempo when Zain Becerra scored on a header, set up by Hunter Somers. This was Zain's 6th goal of the season, leading the Pioneers in scoring. The Pioneers won 3-0, helping goalie Jimmy Munson gain his 5th shutout. U-High is in action again on Saturday at United Township High School (Moline).

September 21, 2011 (7:00 pm)

The Pioneers are looking for an opportunity to start a winning streak with Dunlap and Moline standing in their way. Dunlap High School comes to town on Thursday at 4:30pm, and U-High travels to Moline (United Township High School) on Saturday. The JV will play first in Moline, with an 11am start time with Varsity to follow (bus time at 7:15am). The location of the Moline matches has changed as well. The address is 851 18th St, Silvis, Illinois 61282, and it is located north of the Super Wal-Mart. Once you pass the Wal-Mart lot you will turn right at a light, and then left on a frontage road. Follow it for a quarter mile and the complex is on the right. Click Here for a Google Map Link to the complex.

The upcoming Jacksonville Challenge Cup is on October 7th and 8th (Varsity only). U-High gets another chance at Galesburg on that Friday at 4:30pm. The first time these two teams met, it ended with a 2-2 draw. Jacksonville, Macarthur, Taylorville, Bloomington, Lincoln and Warrensburg high schools will all be competing as well. U-High is the defending champion of the tournament.

Tough Loss for U-High

September 18, 2011 (3:00 pm)

One goal games are not going well for U-High, as they lost to Quincy Notre Dame on Saturday, 1-0. The offensive firepower has been sputtering lately as U-High and QND battled for 70 minutes of the game. Each team had plenty of chances and each goalie made several fine saves. With 10 minutes left, QND scored on a hard and low shot, taken from 25 yards out, beating goalie Jimmy Munson. Within minutes, striker Zain Becerra hit the post on an excellent setup by midefielder Hunter Somers. The Pioneers look to find their scoring touch against Dunlap at home on Thursday (4:30pm).

Centennial Gets By U-High

September 15, 2011 (9:00 am)

U-High struck fast and early but could not hold off Centennial, losing 2-1 at home. Brad Dulee started off the scoring with an exceptional free kick from about 25 yards out. The shot hooked into the upper left corner of the goal, making the score 1-0 for U-High in the first 10 minutes of the game. The lead was short lived when a Centennial player took a chip shot from about 30 yards out and beat goalie Jimmy Munson. Just before the half, Centennial was awarded a penalty shot that they capitalized on, making it 2-1. The second half was back and forth, with both teams having plenty of chances, but neither team cashing in. U-High's next opponent is Quincy Notre Dame on Saturday at 11am (at Home).

U-High/Centennial Rematch Wednesday

September 13, 2011 (11:00 am)

The team that knocked the Pioneers out of the playoffs last year, will be headed to U-High's home field on Wednesday (4:30pm). U-High has revenge on their mind after the double overtime loss that ended their season last year in Champaign. After both teams exchanged scoring punches, it was knotted at 1-1 when it entered sudden death overtime. The golden goal came in the second overtime as an unmarked Centennial player found the ball from 7 yards out.

U-High and Galesburg Draw

September 10, 2011 (8:00 am)

U-High and Galesburg battled for 80 minutes only to see the game end in a tie on Saturday. Galesburg started off the scoring 30 seconds into the match after a series of passes that led to Drake Sykes having an opportunity for GHS within 18 yards. The Streaks advantage was short-lived though. Zain Becerra scored on a Penalty Shot after Conner Brooks was fouled in the box, knotting the game at 1-1. Just before the half, Mark Nalefski took a left footed shot from 21 yards out that found the left corner of the net, putting U-High up 2-1 at halftime. This was Nalefski's 2nd goal of the season. The 2nd half was much of the same, with U-High controlling the tempo, and having the edge in shots on goal. Unfortunately, with 4:57 left on the clock, Zach Riley of Galesburg found himself 12 yards out with the ball on a counter-attack. GHS scored and the game ended in a tie at 2-2. U-High plays on Wednesday at home against Champaign Centennial (4:30pm).

Becerra Brothers Chip In

September 8, 2011 (8:00 pm)

Zain and Feras Becerra both got onto the stat sheet as they helped U-High beat Mahomet-Seymour High School 3-0. Will Provosty started the scoring off by finishing a cross from Feras Becerra at the 20 minute mark of the 1st half. This was Provosty's first goal of the season. Zain Becerra, who has been nursing a knee injury, entered the game for some spot minutes and ended up with a brace in about 15 minutes of action. His first goal was set up with a perfect thru ball by senior Josh "Shoes" Ashley. Zain broke in behind the Mahomet defense and slotted the ball into the lower left corner. His second goal was set up from a freekick by junior Brad Dulee. Zain flashed in front of the goal and headed the ball into the near post. U-High's next match is at Galesburg High School on Saturday (TIME CHANGE: Varsity at 3pm and JV at 5pm).

Instant Classic: U-High v. PND

September 7, 2011 (7:00 am)

Another thrilling finish took place last night when U-High visited the 40th ranked team in the nation, Peoria Notre Dame High School. Peoria Notre Dame struck first on the 10 minute mark when U-High defenders accidentally knocked a PND cross into their own net for an own goal. However, the 1-0 deficit did not deter the Pioneers. 64 minutes of play passed that was some of the most intense soccer of the season, when finally U-High struck back. With 6 minutes left, Feras Becerra took the ball around 2 PND defenders in the middle of the pitch and hit a 30 yard shot past the Irish goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Unfortunately, the tie game only lasted 4 minutes. With 2 minutes left, PND struck back with a 30 yard shot of their own by Brad Lazzari, that barely tucked under the crossbar and into the net. The final 2 minutes were frantic, with U-High desperately trying to score an equalizer. The exciting match ended as a 2-1 loss, and U-High now looks to its next opponent, Mahomet High School at home on Thursday (4:30pm).

U-High Over Central

September 6, 2011 (7:00 am)

U-High had to beat Central Catholic High School and a very strong wind on Monday night. Luckily, they were up for the challenge. U-High got on the score sheet in the second half after several close chances. Brock Jones finished off a rebound from a shot by Feras Becerra to make it 1-0. Soon after, Hunter Somers was the assist man on a nice chip to Mark Nalefski. Nalefski scored his first goal of the season, ending the scoring at 2-0. U-High plays again tonight away against Peoria Notre Dame at 7pm. (From left to right: Will Provosty, Jaik Hunt)

NCHS Tops U-High

August 31, 2011 (7:00 pm)

A slow start and some shaky defending on corner kicks were exactly what Normal Community needed to take this years Intercity Tournament crown. After just 4 minutes, NCHS struck early to make it 1-0 after a series of give and goes through the midfield. Just before the half, they struck again on a corner, making it 2-0. After the halftime deficit, U-High pressured the NCHS defense, trying desperately to get back into the game. NCHS held firm and scored on another corner that slipped through the hands of goalie Jimmy Munson, ending the game at 3-0. U-High's final intercity game is against Central Catholic High School, Monday at 4:30pm at the Sale Barn fields in Bloomington.

U-High 2, West 0

August 31, 2011 (7:00 pm)

The Pioneers were ready for the Normal West challenge tonight, as they gained some revenge for a 2-0 loss last year. Halfway through the first half, Brock Jones picked up an errant pass by the West goalkeeper, moved around one defender, and slotted a shot in the far left corner to make it 1-0. The game then went back and forth as Jimmy Munson, U-High's goalkeeper, made several fine saves to hold the lead at halftime. Halfway through the second half, the Pioneers held possession and strung several nice passes together, ending with Brock Jones having the ball in the Normal West box. A quick move and Jones was fouled, forcing the Penalty Shot, which he converted to make it 2-0. Munson tallied his 2nd shutout of the year, as U-High cruised to the win. U-High now looks towards their match against NCHS (at home) on Saturday morning at 10am. (From left to right: Zain Becerra, Myles Shane, Brock Jones, Brad Dulee)

U-High Passes First Intercity Test

August 29, 2011 (8:00 pm)

The Pioneers posted a decisive 3-0 win tonight against the Raiders of Bloomington High School. Brad Dulee started the scoring off with a successful Penalty Shot after Brock Jones was fouled in the box. The first half tally was Dulee's first of the season, but he was not done. In the second half, he setup Hunter Somers for his first goal, and 10 minutes later, played a freekick into Brock Jones, who passed to Somers, for his second of the evening. Somers second goal ended any chances Bloomington had to get back into the game. It was his first brace of his career. U-High now looks towards their next challenge, Normal West, at 4:30pm at West on Wednesday.

August 26, 2011 (8:00 pm)

The Pioneers are looking forward to mixing it up with the local high schools in the Intercity Tournament starting on Monday. The Pioneers, at 1-1, will take on Bloomington on Monday at 4:30 at home. U-High beat Bloomington 3 times last season, including a Regional Playoffs match. On Wednesday (4:30), they will battle against Normal West High School (at West). West won the contest last year in a hard fought match. Saturday at 10am, Normal Community will visit U-High. UHigh will look for redemption after a Normal win last year. The match could be the marquee battle for the Intercity Tournament. Finally, on Monday, Central Catholic (4:30) plays host to the Pioneers. Last year, U-High beat the Saints decisively on their home field. The team is asking for a lot of supporters at all of the games! Come on out!

Morton Downs U-High

August 26, 2011 (8:00 am)

An early first half lead proved enough for Morton High School, as they beat the Pioneers 3-1 last night. After two goals by the Potters in the first half, Brock Jones answered to cut Morton's lead in half at the 10 minute mark. Early in the 2nd half, a penalty shot was awarded to Morton, who capitalized on it and cruised to victory. U-High's next match is against Bloomington at home on Monday to kickoff the Intercity Tournament.

U-High 2, Danville 1

August 24, 2011 (8:00 am)

U-High opened their 2011 campaign last night with a victory over Danville High School. All the scoring took place in the 1st half, with Zain Becerra netting two goals, assisted by Feras Becerra and Hunter Somers. The Pioneers have a game against Morton on Thursday night and then the Intercity Tournament begins.
